What is NetherLight?

NetherLight is a Global Exchange Point (GXP) operated by SURF.

Located in Amsterdam, it serves as a key hub for exchanging network traffic between national and international research and education networks (NRENs). It also connects vendors to Dutch R&E institutions.

NetherLight provides high-speed connectivity, enables international collaboration, and supports cutting-edge network technologies—making it a vital part of the digital infrastructure for research and education.




If you are

a SURF member you can use NetherLight to connect your scientists and educators to international partners and/or to connect vendors connected to NetherLight to your network. You do not need to purchase a port on NetherLight for this, for members, these services are included in the All-In tariff.

an NREN or Research/Network Partner you can use NetherLight to connect to Dutch scientists and educators, or connect to other NRENs and partners via the Global Exchange Point concept. For that, you will need to purchase a port on NetherLight.

a Cloud/Service Provider to SURF members after purchasing a port on NetherLight you can provide services to SURF members at their request.
