With eduID we aim to make logging into (online) services as easy and secure as possible. We therefore offer several login options, to ensure there is always an option available which fits your needs. In this article we explain how you can login with eduID using a security key.

What is a security key?

A security key is a separate hardware token or a built-in device that strictly belongs to you, which you can use to prove that you are the legitimate user of your eduID account. It thus replaces a password, with which you essentially do the same thing.

There are different kinds of security keys, for instance separate keys with USB, NFC or bluetooth that you connect to your device (computer, laptop or smartphone) or built-in security keys - think of a fingerprint scanner or facial recognition.

How does it work?

You first need to link the security key to your own eduID account. This way you prove that the security key you want to belongs to you and your eduID account. So don't lose this key and don't lend it to others!

Some security keys can be used on multiple devices at the same time (separate hardware keys, such as a Yubikey). Others, like a built-in sensor (fingerprint, facial recognition) are linked to a specific device and a specific browser. In other words, if you link TouchID from your MacBook to eduID via Chrome, it will not be directly usable in Safari on that same MacBook. You will then have to link the security key to eduID again (in Safari).

How do I add a security key to my eduID account?

1. Go to My eduID and log in the usual way (with a Magic Link or password, if you have set one).

2. On the left hand side, choose the option 'Security'. Click on the button 'Add security key'.

3. Give the key a recognisable name, e.g. 'Fingerprint scanner Safari' or 'My yellow Yubikey'. Then click 'Start'.

4. Click 'Start' to add the key. A screen will open that differs per browser, so follow your browser's instructions.

5. That's it! Your security key has been added to your eduID account. You can now use it to login to (online) services with eduID.
