An eduID is an account for users within education and research in the Netherlands. It is yours and exists independent of an educational institution. You can use eduID to login to certain services available within SURFconext.
Creating an eduID
Create an eduID (from your computer)
Go to eduid.nl and click on "Create eduID". (You can also get there by clicking "My eduID" and then "Create an eduID".)
- Fill in your details, such as your email address, first name, and last name, as requested. Read the terms of use and privacy statement carefully. If you agree, check the box that says "I agree to the terms of use and I understand the privacy statement." Then click on "Create an eduID."
Use your personal email! If you enter an institutional email address, you'll receive a warning.
Keep in mind that if you are no longer studying or working at that institution, you will no longer have access to that email address.
We recommend using your personal email address for eduID. - You will now receive a confirmation email with a code in your inbox. The verification email might end up in your spam folder, so check your spam folder if the email doesn't appear in your inbox within a few minutes.
- Enter the code from the email on the eduID screen. Your eduID has been created, and you will be redirected to mijn.eduID.nl or the service you were heading to.
Linking the eduID app to your account
- With the eduID app, you can log in more securely and quickly. For security reasons, some services may require the use of the eduID app.
Perhaps you already added the app when you created your eduID? If not, you can still add it!
Download the eduID app from the Play Store or App Store. The eduID app is published by SURF B.V. - Then log in with your eduID account on the eduID app.
Create an eduID (with the app)
Creating an eduID in the app is similar to creating one in the browser. Once you've created an eduID in the app, you can also log in to mijn.eduid.nl at any time.
- Download the eduID app from the Play Store or App Store. The eduID app is published by SURF B.V.
Open the eduID app and follow the steps to create an eduID. These steps are similar to those in the browser.
You can find more information about the eduID app here: eduID app (EN)#CreatinganeweduIDintheapp

Step 4: The eduID app will open. Are you sure you want to log in? Check the details and select "Log in."
Verifying information within eduID using another account
Some services, such as edubadges, require you to verify your eduID details with another account. This could be an account from your (educational) institution, but there are also alternative options, such as through a Dutch bank and the eIDAS system. By doing this, the application (like edubadges) ensures that the badges are awarded to the correct users.
If it's necessary to link your eduID with your institution's account, eduID will ask for it automatically. You don’t need to do it in advance, although you can. Below, we explain the steps you need to follow.
1. Go to My eduID and press 'Personal info'.
On your computer: In the app:
2. Click on one of the 'Confirm your identity' buttons. You will then see the following screen.
Op je computer: In de app:
3. Do you choose option 1 to confirm your identity via your institution? This is often the easiest way. You will then reach the following screen: Select your institution here.
4. Log in to your institution. Once this is successful, you will return to eduID; your institution's account will now be linked. You can see exactly which data eduID has received from your institution, when the link was made, and when it will expire. You can also remove the link.
Alternative Step 3b. Can't confirm your identity through an institution? But would you like to confirm it via your bank or eIDAS? Select that option. More information can be found here: Alternative verification methods (iDIN & eIDAS)

I have a question about the eduID app!
You can find more information about the eduID app here: eduID app (EN)
Can I change my e-mail address in eduID?
Yes you can! Go to My eduID and then 'Personal info'. To change your e-mail address, click the 'edit icon'.
Do I need to create multiple eduIDs?
No! You create one eduID with your personal email address. Then you add your organisations, where you work or study, such as MBOs, HBOs, and universities. The information that you study or work at these organizations is linked to your eduID. This means you don’t have to use your work, university, or school email. Your eduID remains valid even if you go to study or work somewhere else. You can simply add your new organisation again.
If you accidentally created an eduID with your organisation email, you can easily fix this via My eduID. Log in, click on ‘Personal info’ and then the edit icon next to your email address to update it.
What does 'Session lost' mean and what can I do about it?
If you encounter this error something went wrong during the login process. For example, it's possible that after you clicked the login button within a certain service, you waited too long with actually logging in.
Most likely however is that you used the Magic Link login method and something went wrong. You must open the Magic Link from within the same browser session as where you requested the Magic Link. Also, you can use each Magic Link only once.
Does the Magic Link automatically open in another browser when you click it? In this case you used another browser than the default browser configured in your Operating System. As a workaround, you can right-click the Magic Link in the e-mail you got from eduID and select 'Copy Link'. Then, go to the browser where you requested the Magic Link and paste the link in the address bar.
Alternatively, you can use a password to secure your eduID which allows you to circumvent the Magic Links.
What is a 'Magic Link'?
Magic Links are currently only used in the eduID apps but are being phased out. Magic Links are being replaced by an email with a login code.
Because you have to remember more and more passwords, it becomes more likely that you will either reuse the same password across different websites or that you use easy to remember and thus unsecure passwords.
eduID provides an innovative and secure alternative to passwords: a Magic Link. First you fill in your username (e-mail address); then, eduID will send an e-mail to you with a unique link that logs you in when you click on it. This link is only valid for 10 minutes and can only be used once!
Can I use a password instead?
Yes, you can. If you go to My eduID, press the 'Security' tab, you can enter a (strong and safe!) password there.
What is a security key and how does it work?
A security key is the most secure option you have for loggin in with eduID. Here we explain what it is and how you can use it.
Why do I see so little data?
In mijn.eduid.nl and in the app, you see your preferred name and/or first name, last name, and email address. Sometimes also your date of birth.
If you want to see what other data is stored, for example when and where you last used your eduID, you can. This information can be found under "Account" and "Download information."
My name is incorrect! What now?
You cannot just change your verified name. However, you can always change your preferred name!
Is your first or last name incorrect? We receive your first and last name from the institution, bank, or European ID provider exactly as it appears on your passport. Unfortunately, we cannot change this; you need to contact the party where you were verified:
Verified through your institution: You can change your name via your institution or school.
Dutch bank: You may need to update your name through the bank. The bank will provide you with more information.
European ID: You need to contact the party you verified with. Visit the website of the European ID you used.
After your name change is successful, you can update your name in eduID. Do this by first deleting your name data (see below) and then verifying again!
Unfortunately, we cannot assist if you want to change your name due to marriage or gender transition. You must make these changes through the official parties and then update your name in eduID.
If you verified your name through your bank, we only receive the initial(s). So only the letters of your first names appear under “first name.” This is correct, and you don’t need to change anything. You can enter your full preferred name in the "Preferred name" field.
Do I already have an eduID?
The best thing to do is just go to mijn.eduid.nl and fill in your personal email. If you already have an account you will be prompted to login. If you do not have an account, you will be asked to create an account instead.
Can I removing part of your data in eduID?
You can remove (part of) your (verified) data in eduID.
Note: removing the connection might prevent use of certain services. Some educational services require proof of a link to an institution. If this is the case, you will be asked to link the institution again.
If you are sure, go to "Personal info" in eduID.
Click on the "V" next to the data you want to delete. Then click on "Manage your verified information."
Next, you can see a page "Your verified information". Search here for the data you want to delete and click "Delete this information" from eduID.
Can I delete my eduID?
If you no longer wish to use or keep your eduID you can delete your eduID account at https://mijn.eduid.nl. Choose 'Account' on the left side to see how your eduID can be removed.
