An eduID is an account for users within education and research in the Netherlands. It is yours and exists independent of an educational institution. You can use eduID to login to certain services available within SURFconext.

Creating an eduID

Create an eduID (from your computer)

  1. Go to eduid.nl and click on "Create eduID". (You can also get there by clicking "My eduID" and then "Create an eduID".)

  2. Fill in your details, such as your email address, first name, and last name, as requested. Read the terms of use and privacy statement carefully. If you agree, check the box that says "I agree to the terms of use and I understand the privacy statement." Then click on "Create an eduID."

Use your personal email! If you enter an institutional email address, you'll receive a warning.
Keep in mind that if you are no longer studying or working at that institution, you will no longer have access to that email address.
We recommend using your personal email address for eduID.

  3. You will now receive a confirmation email with a code in your inbox. The verification email might end up in your spam folder, so check your spam folder if the email doesn't appear in your inbox within a few minutes.

  4. Enter the code from the email on the eduID screen. Your eduID has been created, and you will be redirected to mijn.eduID.nl or the service you were heading to.

Linking the eduID app to your account

  1. With the eduID app, you can log in more securely and quickly. For security reasons, some services may require the use of the eduID app.
Perhaps you already added the app when you created your eduID? If not, you can still add it!
Download the eduID app from the Play Store or App Store. The eduID app is published by SURF B.V.
  2. Then log in with your eduID account on the eduID app.

Create an eduID (with the app)

Creating an eduID in the app is similar to creating one in the browser. Once you've created an eduID in the app, you can also log in to mijn.eduid.nl at any time.

  1. Download the eduID app from the Play Store or App Store. The eduID app is published by SURF B.V.
  2. Open the eduID app and follow the steps to create an eduID. These steps are similar to those in the browser.

You can find more information about the eduID app here: eduID app (EN)#CreatinganeweduIDintheapp

Logging in with eduID

Step 1. The first time you want to log in to a service with eduID using a new or fresh browser or device, you'll see the "choose your institution" screen.
Select eduID here (type 'eduID' in the search bar).

Step 2. You’ll be redirected to the eduID login page. Enter your email address and click "Next."

Note: If you don’t have an eduID yet, you can create one at that moment by clicking "Create an eduID!" The steps are the same as described above.

Step 3. Logging in! How you log in depends on the methods you’ve added yourself. See the different options below:

Logging in with a code (without the app)

Step 3. You’ll receive a code by email. You can enter this code on the screen. You’ll then be logged in!

(But you can also choose other login methods at the bottom, such as "password," "with the app," or "passkey.". Click on "login options.")

Verifying information within eduID using another account

Some services, such as edubadges, require you to verify your eduID details with another account. This could be an account from your (educational) institution, but there are also alternative options, such as through a Dutch bank and the eIDAS system. By doing this, the application (like edubadges) ensures that the badges are awarded to the correct users.
If it's necessary to link your eduID with your institution's account, eduID will ask for it automatically. You don’t need to do it in advance, although you can. Below, we explain the steps you need to follow.

1. Go to My eduID and press 'Personal info'.

On your computer: In the app:

2. Click on one of the 'Confirm your identity' buttons. You will then see the following screen.

Op je computer: In de app:

3. Do you choose option 1 to confirm your identity via your institution? This is often the easiest way. You will then reach the following screen: Select your institution here.

4. Log in to your institution. Once this is successful, you will return to eduID; your institution's account will now be linked. You can see exactly which data eduID has received from your institution, when the link was made, and when it will expire. You can also remove the link.

Alternative Step 3b. Can't confirm your identity through an institution? But would you like to confirm it via your bank or eIDAS? Select that option. More information can be found here: Alternative verification methods (iDIN & eIDAS)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Account Management

How do I manage my eduID?

Do you want to view your eduID, update your details, or change something? Go to mijn.eduid.nl. There you can manage everything related to your eduID.

How do I change my email address?

You can change your email address via My eduID:

  1. Log in at eduid.nl.
  2. Go to 'Personal info'.
  3. Click the 'edit' icon next to your email address.

Can I delete my eduID?

Want to delete your eduID because you no longer use the account? Log in at https://mijn.eduid.nl and go to 'Account'. You can delete your eduID there.

Please note: think carefully about the consequences of deleting your eduID. You may lose access to certain applications, which cannot be recovered.

Personal Details

Do I need multiple eduID's?

No. You only need one eduID.

  • Create it with your personal email address.
  • Then add organisations, such as a vocational college, university of applied sciences, or university.
  • Switching studies or jobs? Your eduID will remain active.

Have you accidentally created an eduID with your school or organisation's email address? You can change this via My eduID under 'Personal info'.

My name is incorrect. What now?

You cannot change your verified name yourself. You can always change your preferred name.

Is your first or last name incorrect? We receive the details as they appear in your passport, so we are unable to make changes. This must be done through the party with whom you were verified.

You will need to update your name with that party first:

  • Institution: contact your school or university.
  • Dutch bank: update your name at the bank.
  • European ID: visit the website of the ID provider you used.

After the change, you can update your name in eduID again by first deleting the existing details and then completing the verification process again.

Has your name changed due to marriage or a gender change? This is usually handled through the municipality first. After that, you can also update your name in eduID.

Only seeing an initial? That may be correct. If you verified your name through your bank, we only receive the initial(s) of your name. You can then enter your full name under 'preferred name'.
