An eduID is an account for users within education and research in the Netherlands. It is yours and exists independent of an educational institution. You can use eduID to login to certain services available within SURFconext.

Creating a new eduID

If your institution is not connected to SURFconext, you can use eduID to login as a so-called guest user to certain services.

1. If you wish to login to a service through SURFconext using eduID, for instance the service https://profile.surfconext.nl, choose eduID as your institution (search for 'eduID' in the screen where you have to select an institution or click the 'eduID is available as alternative' link).

2. If you haven't got an eduID yet, you can create a new by by clicking 'Request one!' at the top of the page.

3. Enter your e-mail address, your first and last name and carefully read through the terms of use and privacy policy. If you agree to the terms of use, please check the "I Agree" box. Then, click 'Request your eduID' to continue the registration process.

Plase note: are you going to use eduID to login to Mijn SURFmarket? Please register with your institutional e-mail adress, not your private e-mail address!

4. Success! You will receive a verification e-mail in your inbox shortly. It might end up in your Spam folder, so please check it regularly if the e-mail does not seem to arrive within a few minutes.

5. In this e-mail, please click 'Verify this email address' to complete the registration. If this link opens in the same browser as the one you used to request an eduID, you are now all set! Your eduID has been created and you will be sent on your way to the service you wanted to use.

If however the link opens in a different browser than the one you used to request an eduID, additional verification steps are needed.

If however the link opens in a different browser than the one you used to request an eduID, additional verification steps are needed.

Verifying information within eduID using another account

Some services, such as edubadges, require that you connect the account of your (educational) institution to your eduID. By doing so, the service ensures badges are awarded to the right person.

As soon as it is necessary for the service you want to use to connect your institutional account to eduID, eduID will prompt you to do so. You do not have to do this in advance (but you can if you want to). Read the steps below to learn how to connect your institutional account to eduID.

1. Go to My eduID and press 'Personal info'.

2. Click on one of the 'Verify' or 'Proof' buttons. It doesn't matter which one. Read the brief explanation and press 'Proceed' once you are finished. In the next screen, select the institution which you would like to connect to your eduID.

3. Complete the login process at your institution. If you are logged in successfully, you are all set! Through My eduID you can see the details of this connection: which data eduID received from your institution, when the connection was made and when it will expire. You can also remove the connection here if you want to.

Removing/deleting your eduID

If you no longer wish to use or keep your eduID you can delete your eduID account at https://mijn.eduid.nl. Choose 'Account' on the left side to see how your eduID can be removed.

Please note: think carefully before you delete your eduID! After your eduID has been deleted, it could very well be that you can never access certain services again; this can not be undone.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I change my e-mail address in eduID?

Yes you can! Go to My eduID and then 'Personal info'. To change your e-mail address, click the 'edit icon'.

What does 'Session lost' mean and what can I do about it?

If you encounter this error something went wrong during the login process. For example, it's possible that after you clicked the login button within a certain service, you waited too long with actually logging in.

Most likely however is that you used the Magic Link login method and something went wrong. You must open the Magic Link from within the same browser session as where you requested the Magic Link. Also, you can use each Magic Link only once.

Does the Magic Link automatically open in another browser when you click it? In this case you used another browser than the default browser configured in your Operating System. As a workaround, you can right-click the Magic Link in the e-mail you got from eduID and select 'Copy Link'. Then, go to the browser where you requested the Magic Link and paste the link in the address bar.

Alternatively, you can use a password to secure your eduID which allows you to circumvent the Magic Links.

What is a 'Magic Link'?

Because you have to remember more and more passwords, it becomes more likely that you will either reuse the same password across different websites or that you use easy to remember and thus unsecure passwords.

eduID provides an innovative and secure alternative to passwords: a Magic Link. First you fill in your username (e-mail address); then, eduID will send an e-mail to you with a unique link that logs you in when you click on it. This link is only valid for 10 minutes and can only be used once!

Can I use a password instead?

Yes, you can. If you go to My eduID, press the 'Security' tab, you can enter a (strong and safe!) password there.

What is a security key and how does it work?

A security key is the most secure option you have for loggin in with eduID. Here we explain what it is and how you can use it.
