The examples and use cases described here are intended to show the different ways SURF Research Access Management can be used and connected to application. These examples and use cases are not always validated by SURF.

The eduVPN service by SURF offers secure access to protected applications when accessing from outside your institution's network. An institution using both the eduVPN service and SURF Research Access Management, can use the combination to offer secure access to researchers outside their own institution, enabling collaborative research on their own research applications protected with a firewall.

Requirements

  • eduVPN
  • SURF Research Access Management
  • The number of researchers that will be using eduVPN via SRAM. A connected eduVPN user will get an IP address within a private IP range (RFC 1918) and one public IPv4 and IPv6 address will be used for each eduVPN profile

Configuration

Contact eduvpn@surf.nl to setup a profile.

Create a collaboration in Research Access Management and connect theh eduVPN service.

Members of this collaboration will be able to use the SURF Research Access Management as 'Institute Access' to authenticate and establish a VPN connection.

Researcher flow

The researcher already has an SRAM identity and needs to be instructed to install eduVPN and pick 'SURF Research Access Management' as institution.

Select 'SURF Research Access Management' on the last screen. The connection should be established.
