When using the data archive, multiple users or project folders may use a single grant or contract. To simplify the inspection and management of your grant or contract you can use dsbudgetinfo. Depending on your role, the tool will provide different information:

Archive User

As an Archive user, you can use dsbudgetinfo to inspect how much data you have stored in the different folders you have access to on the Data Archive. To use dsbudgetinfo,

log in to archive.surfsara.nl using your credentials

ssh <login>@archive.surfsara.nl

and run the command:

[service1]:~
archive-user$ dsbudgetinfo
                 usage / budget
archive-user 0.0 / 50.0 TB ( 0 files)
project-folder 13.7 / 50.0 TB (429 files)

Budget usage 14.7 / 50.0 TB (438 files)

Budget valid from 2021-01-01 to 2025-12-31
Contract 2101011_01: Data Archive contract 2021-2026

The output shows information about your contract and the usage of the contract. The first lines show the usage and number of files in each of the home folders you have access to, in this case, the personal home folder and a project folder. The next line shows a summary of the usage of all users of a project and may include data you do not have access to. The last lines show general information about the duration of the contract and the contract number.

Sometimes, an asterisk may appear at the end of a usage line:

[service1]:~
archive-user$ dsbudgetinfo
                 usage / budget
archive-user 0.0 / 50.0 TB ( 0 files)
project-folder 0.8 / 50.0 TB (420129 files) (*)

Budget usage 0.8 / 50.0 TB (420129 files) (*)

Budget valid from 2021-01-01 to 2025-12-31
Contract 2101011_01: Data Archive contract 2021-2026

(*) warning: using too many files. Please see:
https://servicedesk.surf.nl/wiki/display/WIKI/Data+Archive#DataArchive-How?-Guidelinesforstoringdataonthearchive

This means that a single folder, or the project as a whole, is storing too many small files on the Data Archive. Storing a lot of small files results in lower archive performance and needs to be resolved as soon as possible. For more information and help in resolving this situation, please follow the instructions on this page

Budget Owner

As a budget owner, you can use dsbudgetinfo to inspect how much data all users of a budget have stored in their folders on the Data Archive. To use dsbudgetinfo log in to archive.surfsara.nl using your credentials and run the command:

[service1]:~
budget-owner$ dsbudgetinfo

Contract 2101011_01: Data Archive contract 2021-2026

In this case, this is your data, the data of two users, and the data of a project folder. The next line shows a summary of the entire budget. The last lines show general information about the duration of the contract and the contract number.
