Wallets are the means through which you finance your workspaces in Research Cloud. Each wallet is linked to a specific contract.
Your contract is linked to a Small or Large Compute grant, or there might be an RCCS contract between your institution and SURF.
The content of the wallet reflects the resources included in that contract.
Once you have a wallet in Research Cloud, you will be able to use it when creating a workspace.
When starting a workspace in the Research Cloud portal, you will see a list of the wallets that are available to you.
When you have launched a workspace, the attached wallet will start being debited for the usage that the workspace makes.
Wallets can be shared with other members of your collaboration. Please read this documentation page on how to do that.
On the "Wallet" tab of the Research Cloud portal, you can see your wallets. Each wallet is represented by one tile.
You can click on each tile to see details and charts representing the usage of the wallet. All wallet overviews include the following sections:
General information about the wallet
This section shows key information about the wallet and its associated contract, including:
- Contract name and type
- Contract duration
- Total, used, and remaining resources (measured in credits or CPU/GPU hours and TBs, depending on the contract)
The date picker
In this section, you can select the date range for which you want to view your consumption. By default, the consumption for the last 30 days is displayed. To view usage over the full duration of your contract, click “Load contract duration”.
The selected date range applies to all the charts and data export (including a CSV file) in the wallet overview.
Budget overview
This section provides an overview of all budgets linked to your wallet.
- For Small and Large Compute grants, you will see separate budgets and plots for CPU (core-hours), GPU hours, and storage (TBs).
- For RCCS contracts, usage is tracked in credits, so you will see a single plot showing total credit consumption. To understand how credits translate into CPU, GPU, and storage usage for RCCS contracts, refer to the RCCS contract page.
The plots in this section are interactive. Click and drag to zoom in on a specific area. Double-click anywhere on the chart to reset the view.
Consumption overview
This section shows a more detailed breakdown of how resources were consumed during the selected date range.
- For Small and Large Compute grants, separate bar charts display CPU, GPU, and storage usage.
- For RCCS contracts, a single bar chart shows usage in credits.
You can adjust the data granularity (per day, week, or month).
The plots in this section are interactive. Click and drag to zoom in on a specific area. Double-click anywhere on the chart to reset the view.
Each bar is divided into segments representing different consuming resources. Hover over a segment to view:
- Resource name
- Type of product (see below what each product means)
- Resource ID
- Cost
Note: If a resource is shown with “–” as the name and product, it means it belongs to a collaboration you do not have access to. This can happen when wallets are used across multiple collaborations.
Each resource that consumes from a wallet is categorized by a product type. Below is a list of product identifiers for each contract type.
Understanding credit usage charts
The wallet page shows two different charts that represent various aspects of credit consumption:
- Budget overview (line chart) - shows how credits are deducted from your budget over time.
- Consumption overview (bar chart) - shows the actual resource usage per day, based on when compute or storage resources were used.
These two charts may not always align exactly on the same dates.
This can happen because credit usage data is sometimes corrected or synchronized retroactively due to delays between the cloud systems and the financial system.
In thiscase, usage is shown on the original day in the bar chart, while credits are deducted on the day the correction is applied, which is reflected in the line chart.
Products for Small and Large Compute grants
HPC Cloud:
- CPU workspace: hpcc-ssd, daphne-compute
- GPU workspace: hpcc-ssd, daphne-gpu
- External storage volume: hpcc-hdd
Important notes
Wallets from NWO grants only use HPC Cloud as their cloud provider.
IP and networks on HPC Cloud are free; therefore, you will not see them consuming resources from your wallet.
Every workspace will have two components: compute (daphne-compute for CPU or daphne-gpu for GPU), and hpcc-ssd for SSD storage that is allocated for the OS disk.
Products for RCCS contracts
RCCS wallets may consume resources from both HPC Cloud and public cloud providers. Available public providers depend on your institution’s agreement.
All resources consumed via the RCCS contract are converted to credits.
HPC Cloud:
- CPU workspace: hpcc-ssd, daphne-compute
- GPU workspace: hpcc-ssd, daphne-gpu
- External storage volume: hpcc-hdd
AWS:
- CPU and GPU workspace: aws-ebs-storage, aws-ec2-compute
- External storage volume: aws-ebs-storage
- IP: aws-ec2-eip
Azure:
- CPU and GPU workspace: azure-storage, azure-compute
- External storage volume: azure-storage
- IP: azure-ip
Oracle:
- CPU and GPU workspace: oracle-storage,
- External storage volume: oracle-storage, oracle-compute
- IP: oracle-ip
Important notes:
Important notes
IP addresses may incur charges when using public providers.
Storage volumes are charged in TBs per month. Any created storage volume will consume credits, no matter if it’s attached to a workspace or not.
Storage volumes are charged based on the amount of storage reserved, not on the amount of storage taken by the files on a storage volume. For example, if you created a storage volume of 1 TB and put 100 MB of data on it, you will still be charged for 1 TB of storage, because that is what you have reserved for your project.
Most consuming resources
This section highlights the top 9 consuming resources for the selected date range, per budget.
- For Small and Large Compute grants, you’ll see separate pie charts for CPU, GPU, and storage.
- For RCCS contracts, a single pie chart reflects credit consumption.
Each chart is accompanied by a legend listing resource details.
The “Other” section in each pie chart represents the combined usage of all resources outside the top 9.
Favourite wallet chart
You can pin a wallet chart for a quick overview of your credits.
All wallet charts include a pin icon in the upper-right corner. By clicking this icon, the selected chart is added to the “Favourite wallet chart” tile in the “Quick actions” section on the dashboard.
Because of space limitations, the pinned chart always shows consumption for the last 30 days, displayed with weekly granularity if applicable.
You can update your favourite wallet chart at any time by pinning a different chart. To remove it, click the green pin icon in the upper-right corner of the “Favourite wallet chart” tile in the “Quick actions” section.
Overview on the workspace display tile
Generally, the "Wallet" tab of the Research Cloud portal is your go-to if you want to see how your budget is doing.
However, for your workspaces, there are two bits of information on the workspace's display tile that you might find useful.
Price per day
The "estimated pricing" information on the extended display tile gives you the budget consumption your workspace has.
There are two "prices" specified:
- "Cost EINF" which is valid when your workspace is running on an NWO grant
- "Cost RCCS" which is valid when your workspace is using a budget from a paid contract between your institute and SURF.
The consumption is given on a per-day basis.
Actual accumulated consumption
The "Consumption" field shows you the budget units that your workspace has consumed, totally.
This value lags behind the current time by 48 hours, like any budget reporting in the portal.
