There are two ways to issue an education to a learner:

  1. Through the application process
  2. Via direct award

This page explains all aspects of awarding Direct Awards.

Click further on one of the options to learn more about Direct Award.

Instructions

Go to the badge class. To issue an edubadge via direct award, click on Award edubadge(s).

To award an edubadge directly to one or more students, you need to enter their e-mail address (the institution's e-mail address is fine) and student number (EPPN):

The student number is the EPPN attribute that the institution's identity provider passes on to the edubadges. If this student number is not known, it can be found by referring the student to https://profile.surfconext.nl/my-profile and asking what data is behind the Institution User ID. This student number always has the form xxxx@instellingsdomein.xx.

Make sure you use the correct student number or EPPN! This always has the form xxx@instellingsdomein.xx. At some institutions this is the same as the institution's e-mail address, but that is not necessary.
You can find this EPPN by going to https://profile.surfconext.nl/my-profile and checking the value behind User ID at the institution.

You can also add metadata, such as a number, a personal message or a reference to a URL. To do this, click on the metadata button.

With the + Add another button you can add the next student.

When you're done, click Send.

When the student has linked his/her eduID to the educational institution, the eduID will appear in his/her backpack.

If a student does not have an institutional account, he cannot link his eduID to the educational institution. Instead, the student links his eduID to iDIN or eIDAS. You can read more about that here: Make a Backpack

In this case you can issue the edubadge via the e-mail address.

Go to the badge class. To issue an edubadge via direct award, click on Award edubadge(s).

Then check the Enable awarding badges solely based on email

Then the screen will look like this:

Now you can also issue this edubadge based on the private e-mail address.

This private e-mail address must match the e-mail address the user used to create their eduID.

You can also add metadata, such as a number, a personal message or a reference to a URL. To do this, click on Add Metadata

Be aware that the student has the option to hide the grade when he shares the edubadge.

With the + Add another button you can add the next student.

When you're done, click Send.

When the student has created his eduID with the same e-mail addres where the edubdage is issued on, the edubadge will appear in his/her backpack.

There is also a possibility to advance a bulk Direct Award. This works by uploading a so-called CSV file. This CSV file contains lines with on each line the mail address and student number of the person who may receive an edubadge. Mail address and student number are separated by a comma. For an example, see: https://api.edubadges.nl/static/sample_direct_award.csv.

Please note: It is important to first choose whether you are going to issue in Bulk based on the private email address or the institution's email address and the EPPN. You cannot combine both in the document. So only based on private email address or only based on the EPPN!

Do you want to know how to issue edubadges based on the email address? Then go to the above instruction Handing out to learners without an institutional account.

In the Award view of a badge class, the Awarded Open Award tab shows the status of edubadges that are directly awarded. There are also other statuses. More information about al the other statuses van be found here: Award view.

An edubadge awarded via a Direct Award will still have to be accepted or claimed by the student. As long as this directly awarded edubadge has not been claimed by the recipient, the edubadge does not actually exist yet. The edubadge (or assertion) is created only after it has been claimed by the student.

The student sees the unclaimed edubadges first in their backpack. The student has 10 weeks to claim the edubadge. The date on which the direct award expires is stated in the email that the student receives when the institution has created the direct award. After 4 weeks and after 8 weeks the student receives a reminder. After 10 weeks the direct award is removed. The student also receives an email about this. Once the direct award has been removed, you will no longer see it in the system.

Click first on View details to claim this edubadge. Then click on Claim & Add to your backpack.

This proces is the same as the first one of this page: Issue to learners with an institutional account.

Be aware: You will have to know the EPPN or private mailadres of the student.
